“A Diamond Broken Free” by Sharon Harrison

A Diamond Broken Free

By: Sharon Harrison, Finalist Youth Poetry Division

Complexion like a chocolate bar
Smooth as silk
Always put down as a child for having
A darker complexion hiding the insecurities
On the inside smiling bright as the sun on the
Outside letting the mean comments roll off
Like a waterfall questioning I’m I different from the rest

A diamond in the rough trying to break free my
Shade is beautiful in every light the darker the berry
The sweeter the juice I agree my shine is finally breaking
Free refusing to believe I’m only beautiful for a dark skin
Girl I’m beautiful because God made me I’m a diamond
Finally broken free

Loving me in every way the darkness of my skin
The sparkle of my eyes and the mode of my body
Everything from God shining bright as a diamond
Being sweet as a berry Yes I am
A Dark skin girl
